Yeah the loft with nurbs and parametric CAD require an accurate drawing, with Blender and subdivision surfaces you have a lot freedom but with less precision but with FreeShip you have the possibility to export in IGES and reconstruct the surfaces with new curves. Solidworks has parametric approach but with Rhino or Moi3d are much simpler the lofting with path guides and several sections.

Thank you for so much information. I trying to model a catamaran with a view to building it. I will take a look at the modelling packages you suggested.

I did find a nice design modelled in SolidWorks but found that the hulls were imported solids. I am not sure that I can deal with them. What I want to do is create profiles for stations and then carve half hulls out of foam.

Thanks, I think these is a simple to do even in SolidWorks..

I've lofted in Solidworks and did not have any issues with my tender.

just basic loft a surface and then thicken to taste. or you could loft a solid and then shell it. it should work just as well either way.
