Guidance on Designing & Developing Mechanical Systems for Robotics and Automation

Hi, everyone!

I’m a student specializing in Manufacturing Design, and I’m new to mechanical system design. However, I’m very interested in robotic applications and factory automation.

Could you guide me on how to get started with:

Designing and developing mechanical systems for robotics?
Integrating these designs into factory automation?
Any suggestions for beginner-friendly resources, tools, or frameworks would also be appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your insights!

Hi Rafq!

Welcome to the field! To get started with designing mechanical systems for robotics and integrating them into factory automation, I’d recommend focusing on these steps:

Learn Basic Principles: Start with understanding mechanical design, kinematics, and dynamics. Solidworks or AutoCAD are great tools for CAD design.
Study Robotics: Dive into robotic kinematics, sensors, actuators, and control systems. Online resources like Coursera or edX can be helpful.
Explore Factory Automation: Look into PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and SCADA systems to understand automation processes.
Hands-On Projects: Build simple robotic prototypes or work with platforms like Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
Connect with Communities: Join forums, attend workshops, or get involved with local makerspaces for learning and networking.
For beginner-friendly resources, check out online courses, robotics kits, and communities like Reddit’s r/robotics.
