Most automotive OEM use ICEM Surf for class a surfaces.

CATIA is best for Surfacing.
What about solidworks???
External shaping is done using styling tool like Alias or Icem Surf.
Then it goes to industrial design surfacing, NX, Catia have several advanced tools to achieve this.
