AutoCAD Extrude feature

This tutorial will show you things you need to know if you are a beginner in AutoCAD.

  1. Step 1:

Extrude feature in AutoCAD is pretty simple, you draw a profile, activate Extrude command, them you specify you value and that is it.

But I am will show that in detail and you will see some other extrude options.

First of all if I wanna do some 3D stuff I will switch to 3D modeling workspace. That is the first thing I recommend you to do.As you can see on the picture I have one rectangle which I am gonna use for extrude.

What we want to get from this rectangle with extrude command is to add a mass to it and it will be a box shape.

  2. Step 2:

Now I activated Extrude,It asks me to specify height of extrusion,I will write 450.

That is the height of the box which we create from rectangle.

You can change visual appearance of your model, you change it on the top left corner where it usually says 2D wireframe.

And this how extrude works in AutoCAD,now I will just show you some options you have with extrude.

  3. Step 3:

I activated extrude again, now I will not enter a value, instead I will press down arrow key on the keyboard and what we have are some options we can choose.I will click Direction.(Do not let the box on the picture distracts you,it will always show without entering a value,I am on realistic view so you can see it visually like this).

I also drew an aligned line which we need for this occasion.

It wants me to specify the start point of direction.

Now the end point and this line will determine direction an the height of the extrusion.

This is the result, try something by yourself.

  4. Step 4:

Lets go over to another option,Path option, now I have a curved line and the shape of the box will follow the line to its end.I will just click Path and then click the line.

This is it,similar to sweep feature which I am maybe cover in another tutorial.

  5. Step 5:

Now lets check our final option,Taper angle. What that means is our shape is gonna tapper under certain angle, inside or outwards. If we write 45° it will go inside,if we write -45° it will go outwards.

It asks me to specify angle,I will write 45°.

We got a pyramid, now do not get me wrong you have this shapes like boxes, cones, spheres, pyramids already implemented in AutoCAD,you can find them at the top left corner next to extrude.I am just showing you extrude feature in the easiest way possible.

This is what i got when I wrote -45°.

I hope you now know how extrude command works in AutoCAD :)
