Obsessed with Number Theory, I was highly inspired by the work and spirit of Vi Hart. More than a decade later, I truly believe that there isn't a soul who is inherently bad at math.
We all learn differently.
As I oversaw the Learning Support Math Lab, I held much more to my leadership position than simply keeping track of the campus keys to open and close the math lab each day after performing opening and closing tasks.
I was held accountable for a team of tutors (five to ten) each semester. This led me to develop a new set of standard training criteria, as well as the execution to ensure that every new tutor was trained properly.
As I proceed in the Learning Support Math Lab, I was personally entrusted with more; including but not limited to:
- drafted tutoring protocols for their separate, individual courses
- developed and, without cost, distributed specialized educational resources (test preparation and course reference materials)
- worked directly with professors to ensure personally developed tutoring practices were compatible with each faculty’s teaching style
- used experienced IT knowledge to maintain workstations in the lab on a regular basis
- volunteered hours per week, sometimes per day, for tutoring students outside of "official" lab hours
- maintained an "on-call" status to cover any tutor outages often as a volunteer, due to payout limitations, via the campus' student employment allotment
