The Ocean Engineering Program (PEnO) at COPPE/UFRJ is a pioneer in Naval, Ocean, and Coastal Engineering education. Part of the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (COPPE) at UFRJ, it maintains strong industry ties, initially in ship design and later in offshore oil and gas production, maritime logistics, and renewable energy. The program also focuses on sustainable coastal, riverine, and estuarine engineering and is ranked 17th worldwide in Marine/Ocean Engineering.

According to the Brazilian Association of Production Engineering (ABEPRO), Production Engineering focuses on designing and managing systems involving people, materials, equipment, and the environment. The field is highly versatile and interdisciplinary, integrating diverse knowledge areas. The program's structure, with concentrations and research lines, reflects this broad scope.

Graduates receive a solid foundation in Industrial Design, enabling them to evaluate and conceptualize user-object relationships through expertise in design techniques, 2D representation, physical models, and digital prototypes. The program applies scientific methodology, emphasizing functional, ergonomic, and aesthetic criteria in product development. It includes research and extension projects focused on optimizing product function, value, and appearance for both users and manufacturers while ensuring environmental responsibility.
