Crafting a Perforated Cover in SolidWorks

Creating a perforated cover in SolidWorks is a straightforward process involving several key steps. First, open SolidWorks and create a new part file by selecting File, then New, and Part. Choose a plane, such as the Top Plane, to start your sketch. Next, sketch the base shape of your cover. Click on Sketch, then select Rectangle to draw a rectangle on the chosen plane. Use the Smart Dimension tool to set the length and width of the cover. Once the sketch is complete, extrude the base shape by selecting Features, then Extruded Boss/Base. Set the desired thickness of the cover and confirm the extrusion by clicking OK. To create the perforation pattern, select the top face of the extruded cover and start a new sketch on this face. Draw a small circle using the Circle tool and dimension it appropriately. To pattern the circle, click Features, then Linear Pattern. Choose the circle as the feature to pattern and set the spacing and number of instances in the X and Y directions to cover the entire face of the cover. After creating the pattern, use Features, then Extruded Cut to cut the perforations. Select the patterned sketch, set the cut depth to go through the cover, and confirm by clicking OK. For final touches, you can fillet the edges if desired. Select the edges you want to round, click Features, then Fillet, set the radius, and apply the fillet. Additionally, add any other features such as mounting holes using similar sketching and feature tools. Ensure symmetry in your perforation pattern, double-check all dimensions to meet design specifications, and save your work regularly to prevent data loss. By following these steps, you can create a perforated cover in SolidWorks, making adjustments as necessary to fit your specific design requirements.

When asked what smart switch to use to control their gas fireplace, you see a lot of replies "do you want to be one software bug away from your fireplace turning on?" Granted, modern gas fireplaces have safeties in place to prevent un-lit open valves, runaway heating, etc., but some people would still rather have a hardware switch standing between them and fire. This project aims to be the best of both worlds: by running 5v power to the low-voltage switch box holding my fireplace wall switch (in my case, this involved pulling 5-conductor thermostat wire using the existing 2-conductor wire), you can power an ESP board running ESPHome. By running the actual thermostat switch signal through both a DPST and a (ESPHome-controlled) 3v relay, we can be sure that the fireplace is only "active" if the manual switch is turned on.
