How to do a Basic Linear Finite Element Analysis in CATIA V5

After this tutorial, hopefully you will be able to do a simple linear analysis using FEM (Finite Element Method). The steps are straight forward and the part used is available in my profile (foot peg - ATV). The idea behind this is seeing how it reacts to a Pressure of 125 KPa. All the units in this tutorials are in the IS (International System) but i will put the conversions Metric-Imperial. How to Create New Material in CATIA V5

CATIA V5 doesn't have any specific material that engineers need for their FEA. Look at the material library, you can see that there is only one option of steel material which is should be various based on its mechanical properties and their characteristic. In this case you can't simulate the strengh of your AISI 4340 or other specific material using general steel data at CATIA V5 library. Fortunately, CATIA V5 has a feature that allow user to create their custom material.

With the surface simplification functionality, you can merge patches together and obtain a proper surface. Combined with the healing feature, you fill the small gaps and connect all the patches together. To verify if the surface you can offset it to see if it is fully healed. The final step is to open the SIMULIA Structural Model Creation application, to mesh the surface and see why is it useful to clean the surface first.

You will copy the original design in the abstraction shape and apply a material to the 3DPart.
